PROTECT OUR AGRICULTURE LAND&FOOD SAFETY!

Dear name of Farm or Company
My name is--- and from time to time, I have purchased some of your produce/meat/eggs/wine/ from my grocer/farm market/ liquor commisssion/ direct from the farm/company. I have been quite satisfed with my purchases and hope to continue supporting your farm/company in the future. My family firmly believes in the importance of supporting local farmers and wants to be assured that the foods produced in our province are, not only the freshest, but also the safest of foods produced anywhere. We shop in our community and buy local products at every opportunity.

I have been hearing about the use of biosolids (treated sewage waste) by some farmers on their crop or forage fields. Upon learning more about the topic, I have come to the conclusion that, unless residential sewage waste is separated at source from industrial comtaminant sewage streams,using the product as a soil additive or fertilizer on agricultural soils is too risky an endeavor to ensure public health and safety -even if"treated". Treatment will never remove most pollutants and taxpayers should not have to bear the burden of paying for the testing of hundreds of chemical substances that could exist in sludges when they cant be removed by treatment processes.

It has been in the news of late that the Municipality of Kings County has passed a ban on biosolids being used in the county and that some of the Farmer's Markets are starting to establish a "Biosolids Free" policy for all of their vendors.

I was hoping that your farm would also be supportive of this initiative because of the importance of maintaining your excellent reputation as a food grower- which further benefits the buy local "movement". I certainly do want to continue supporting your establishment but I would like to hear from you first. If you have similar concerns and would like to see the Province of Nova Scotia enact a legislated ban on the use of treated sewage sludge as a fertilizer, I have taken the liberty of attaching a copy of the petition, which was resently sent to me. If you wish, please feel free to make a copy of the petition, which was resently sent to me. If you wish, please feel free to make a copy, obtain some signatures, and return the original copy ( with signatures) to the address at the bpttom of the petition.
Kindest Regards
your name and email.

CALL ON GOVERNMENT OF NOVA SCOTIA TO PROTECT OUR AGRICULTURE LAND&FOOD SAFETY!

Wheras: Most sewage sludge(biosolids) while treated contain heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, persistent organic chemials, and other hospital and industrial waste products that are not removed during sewage treatment processes and are known to have immediate and long-term adverse effects on the environment and on human and livestock contributing further to the economic burden of health care costs.

And Whereas:
Toxins found in sewage sludge despite stabilization treatment can remain in the soil for generations, contaminating and degrading resources and groundwater supplies and contribing to economic losses for farmers and rural communites.

And Whereas:
On October29th 2009, the Municipality of Kings County was the first to support a ban on the application of sewage sludge to its lands, bases on potential threats to the health and well being of residents;

And Whereas:
The Goverment of Nova Scotia has the authority and responsibility to create a secure and sustainable future for its citizens and can uphold the decision of any MunicipaL Council to disallow biosolids being spread on lands within their county if residents and members of council support such a ban.

WE THE UNDERSSIGNED, RESIDENTS OF NOVA SCOTIA, RESPECTFULLY PETITION THE GOVERMENT OF NOVA SCOTIA TO DECLARE AND IMMEDIATE MORATORUM ON THE USE OF SEWAGE SLUDGE(BIOSOLIDS) ON NOVA SCOTIA LANDS AND TO ADOPT WITH MINIMUM DELAY SAFE OPTIONS FOR SEWAGE SLUDGE DISPOSAL OR DESTRUCTION.
